Effects of Puberty

PUBERTY- a period of rapid physical maturation involving hormonal and bodily changes that take place primarily in early adolescence

Puberty is a stressful part of being an adolescent for both boys and girls. Their appearance drastically changes leading to unwelcome stress. Growth spurts occur in 2 to 3 year spans where an adolescent will reach their adult height.

All About Puberty

BOYS
1) Occurs usually between the ages of 10 and 15
2) Voices begin to crack and change
3) Genitalia grows larger
4) Hair growth all over body
5) Body odor

Boys tend to mature later than girls. This means the will grow later than the female counterparts which can lead to awkward feelings. In middle school and even high school, many girls are much taller and physically mature than the boys. This time period can be difficult for boys because they do not feel as mature as their female peers.

GIRLS
1) Occurs usually between the ages of 8 and 13
2) Growth in breasts
3) Hips widen
4) Hair growth in pubic area
5) Menstrual process begins

Girls mature much quicker than boys. They become sexually mature at an earlier age and therefore can become subject to confusion in their appearance. They may feel like a kid still but look more like a full grown woman. Research studies conducted by Virginia Tech show that those who develop faster tend to date older boys and are more likely to be involved in a relationship that they are not ready for emotionally or sexually. This can help lead to an increase in depression and the aforementioned eating disorders among early maturing girls.
